An international conference "Qur'an and its role in the unity of Muslim Ummah", organized by the World Forum for the Rapprochement of Islamic Madhabs, took place between January 17 and 19 in Tehran, reports SAMER. The event was timed to coincide with Mawlid an-Nabi.

The opening ceremony was honoured with the presence of the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Hojatoleslam Hassan Rouhani. The congress has brought together sheikhs, ayatollahs, muftis, imams and other significant religious figures fr om all over the world, including official delegations from Syria, Lebanon, Malaysia, Iraq, Jordan, Turkey, Iran, Oman, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Egypt and other countries.

On the invitation of Iranian party, Russia was represented by the mufti of Tatarstan Kamil Samigullin, rector of Moscow Islamic University Damir Hayretdinov and the deputy mufti of Tatarstan Rustam Batrov. The high status of Russian Muslims in the eyes of receiving party was emphasized by the inclusion of Tatarstan mufti into the presidium of the conference.

Participants of the conference discussed issues pertaining to the unity of Muslim Ummah, which is nowadays suffering from fitna and schism. The pursuit of unity and Islamic brotherhood is manifested in the ayahs of the Holy Qur'an and ahadith of the Prophet (peace be upon him). Allah Almighty says in the Holy Qur'an: "Hold fast, all together, to Allah's cord, and do not be divided [into sects]" (3:105). Many of the speakers defined takfirism—accusation of Muslims of apostasy—as the main problem of the Ummah. Using takfir as an ideological instrument, radicals of all kinds commit atrocities and conduct terrorist acts, kill common believers and split the ranks of our Ummah.

The organizers of the conference paid special attention to the topic of Syria, now in catastrophic situation because of an ongoing civil war that divides the country along political as well as religious lines. President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Hassan Rouhani has especially mentioned the role of Russian Federation in the mediation of this crisis. It is worth noting that the conference coincided in time with the end of the visit of Iran's foreign minister to Moscow, which caught a lot of attention from Irani media that covered these news in a positive way.

The conference was widely covered in Iranian press and television. The most important and remarkable part of the event was the meeting of the guests of the conference with the spiritual leader of Iran Ayatollah Khamenei in his residence, wh ere Hojatoleslam Hassan Rouhani and Rahbar Ali Khamenei once again called for unity, brotherhood and integration between Muslims.

Rector of Moscow Islamic University Damir Hayretdinov delivered a report about the lesser-known pages of the history of Russian Shi'a community.
