On the blessed Friday of October 17, at the invitation of the spiritual leader of Russian Muslims, Grand Mufti Sheikh Ravil Gaynutdin, the Moscow Cathedral Mosque was honored by a visit from world-renowned Egyptian Quran reciter Sheikh Abdel Fattah Al-Taruti, Deputy Chief Sheikh of all Quranic educational institutions in the Arab Republic of Egypt. He is visiting Russia as an honored guest of the 23rd Moscow International Quran Recitation Competition.
In his performance, Sheikh Abdel Fattah Al-Taruti moved the mosque's congregation with his majestic and soul-stirring recitation of the Holy Scripture, demonstrating the supreme artistry, melodiousness, and spiritual power of the Egyptian school of huffaz and qaris, which has preserved the refined traditions of tilawa and tajweed for centuries. His voice, filled with reverence and sincere faith, made the hearts of those present tremble with love for the Word of Allah.
Sheikh Al-Taruti is a worthy successor to the distinguished Egyptian school of Quranic recitation, which has gifted the world masters such as Sheikh Muhammad Rifat, Abdul Basit Abdus Samad, Mahmoud Al-Husary, and others. It is symbolic that his recitation took place precisely at the Moscow Cathedral Mosque—the very place where, exactly 55 years ago in 1970, the legendary Sheikh Mahmoud Al-Husary recited the Holy Quran, leaving an indelible mark on the history of Russian-Egyptian spiritual ties.
Today’s recitation by Sheikh Abdel Fattah Al-Taruti was not merely a meeting of two traditions but a living reminder of the continuity of Quranic service, uniting generations and peoples. The Moscow Cathedral Mosque has once again affirmed its status as the spiritual center of Russian Muslims and a platform where the great traditions of Quranic recitation are preserved and revived, strengthening the bridges of brotherhood between Russia and the Islamic world.
