Diyanet magazine publishes an article on 1100th anniversary of adoption of Islam by Volga Bulgaria The June issue of the magazine "Diyanet" published by the Directorate of Religious Affairs of Turkey features an article by Omer Faruk Savuran, Advisor for Religious Affairs at the Embassy of Turkey in Moscow. The article is entitled "The 1,100th Anniversary of Islam in Russia".

Omer Faruk Savuran begins the narrative with the arrival of a mission from Caliph Muqtadir, ruler of the mighty Arab Caliphate of the Abbasid period, in Volga Bulgaria in 922. The author concludes: "The voluntary adoption of Islam by a state three thousand kilometres away from the centre of Islam (of that time) - Baghdad - was not an episodic event. It became an important part of Islamic civilisation. Thus, Islamic civilization was enriched with new colours and new legacy, not only in terms of economy and politics, but also in terms of culture and science. This was the beginning of a new historical stage."

The author reviews a number of important milestones in the development of Islam and the Muslim community in modern Russia up to the present day. He noted  that the decision to celebrate the anniversary at the federal level was made by Russian President V. Putin upon the request of the head of the Religious Board of Muslims of the Russian Federation Mufti Sheikh Ravil Gainutdin in November 2020. The decision to celebrate it was also made by the Muslim community in Russia at the 7th Congress of the Religious Board of Muslims of the Russian Federation, which took place at the Moscow Cathedral Mosque in 2019.

The article also describes the contribution of major religious figures and Russian Muslim scholars to the development of Islamic civilization.
