Mufti Sheikh Ravil Gainutdin's address on tragic events in France On behalf of the Religious Board of Muslims of the Russian Federation, the Russian Muftis Council, the  Russian ummah and myself, I express my condolences to the people of the French Republic due to the atrocious murder of three people at the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Nice.

We condemn attacking innocent people in revenge, we share the pain of French citizens and we grieve together with the French families, the French nation and all those who are not indifferent to injustice.
"Whoever takes a life—unless as a punishment for murder or mischief in the land—it will be as if they killed all of humanity; and whoever saves a life, it will be as if they saved all of humanity," says Allah the Almighty in the Holy Qur’an (5:32). In no way can any murder be commited to restore the honour and good name of Islam and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The Prophet (peace be upon him) himself faced many insults, attempts on his life and other evil acts, but he always responded in a forgiving and merciful way.

Publication and further distribution of offensive cartoon, which we strongly condemn, is an outrageous provocation. Those who have any patriotism and public spirit in their heart will be utterly outraged at their state symbols being mocked. Mockery of the memory of the Prophet (peace be upon him), who is so dear to all Muslims, and mockery of faith wounds deeply the souls of believers. Such offensive behaviour is incompatible with honour and dignity.

We are deeply disappointed with the attitude of the French authorities. Being aware of how deeply these cartoons hurt the believers, the French leadership has chosen to insult its citizens and believers around the world. The French authorities demonstrated its disdain towards Islam and all Muslims.

Unfortunately, many politicians adhere to the idea that cultures, religions and civilizations are incompatible, thus denying the achievements of the contemporary global community. We all choose whether to support hardliners who try to disunite cultures and peoples, or the people of good will who follow the path of mutual respect and brotherhood.

I would like to emphasize that our pure religion is based on mercy and coexistence, not hostility. The greatness of Islam cannot be undermined by cartoons, insults or films. The holiness of the Prophet (peace be upon him) cannot be undermined by ignorant people. While condemning the insulting pictures, let us keep our dignity and demonstrate the greatness of Islam through noble and reasonable deeds.

Only the Lord of the worlds has the power to punish; our duty is to advocate for peace and brotherhood.

Mufti Sheikh Ravil Gainutdin,
Chairman of the Religious Board of Muslims of the Russian Federation,
Chairman of the Russian Muftis Council
